The Basics of Hosting a Good Dinner Party

Bringing people together, whether it’s in your home, out in the garden or under a marquee, is something worth making time for. It doesn't have to be a big event like a birthday, it could just be a casual brunch or just a warm afternoon that feels too good not to share. Any reason is enough- what matters is that you are creating space for people to relax and enjoy each other. That said, even if you have hosted many times before, it's completely normal to feel a bit anxious just before guests arrive. Just remember, it's about creating an atmosphere where people feel comfortable, welcome and able to be themselves. That is what they remember. Not whether the napkins matched or if the playlist was flawless.

Start with the mood, not the menu
Before you even think about what you are serving, take a moment to picture how you want it to feel. Do you want the evening to be cosy and calm, or lively and full of energy? That one decision can help shape everything else, from the lighting and music to how the night flows. Candles and linen send a very different message to coloured lights and a batch of cocktails. Neither is better. Just pick the one that suits you and let it guide your choices. Everything else will fall into place more easily.

Keep things flowing with a few smart set ups
One of the best ways to avoid that kitchen traffic jam is to create simple zones. A drinks table with glasses, a jug of something cold and a few snacks is all you need to give guests a place to settle in straight away. You could even rent a hydration station from a local water cooler company which could end up being the most talked about thing. People will love trying the different flavours and fizz.

Food that is relaxed but still feels special
Try to avoid any dishes that keep you tied to the oven once people arrive, unless that is something you truly enjoy. Big sharing plates, cold salads and one dish meals are your friend here. A board of bread, cheese, fruit and meat is always a winner. A couscous salad with grilled halloumi is even better. Keep things fresh and simple, and label anything with allergens so you are not answering questions all evening.

Music that brings it all together
Music sets the pace. Start with something gentle, then slowly build. You can use a playlist you have put together or choose one that is already out there, but always give it a proper listen first. And definitely turn off the shuffle.

And finally, enjoy it
Once the space feels right and people have what they need, just be present. Top up drinks if you want to, but mostly, sit down and enjoy your own party. What people remember is how it felt to be there, and that is something no perfect canapé can compete with.
