Looking to Land a Job in Fintech?

It’s a good time to find a job in fintech. And actually, at any point past ten years that would have been true too, but it’s especially true today when the industry is going through a boom period. That’s the good news about working in fintech. The bad news is that landing a role can be challenging. This is a competitive field, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only is the industry innovative and forward-thinking, but it usually comes complete with great salaries, flexible working arrangements, and other perks. In other words: if you want to work in fintech, then you’ll have to put in the work. Here are a few handy strategies that should help you land your dream role.

Audit Your Skills and Qualifications
Unless you know someone who can open a door for you in the industry, landing a fintech role requires showing your potential employees that you have the skills and qualifications needed to succeed in the role. So the question is: do you? You can get a good sense of the kind of qualifications you’ll need to work in the industry just by looking at job advertisement postings. If you see that you’re missing a necessity (or even an optional qualification), then work on acquiring it. An effective, often underused strategy for landing a job in fintech (in fact, in many companies) is to act like you already do. A lot of good can come from tailoring your LinkedIn profile so that it clearly leans towards fintech, going to conferences, and just good old-fashioned networking. From Discord groups and Slack channels to Meetup events, there’s no shortage of ways to involve yourself in the industry. And once you’re in, there’s no telling what opportunities might come your way.

Work With a Recruiter
Ffintech jobs are hot property, and, as such, hard to come by. In fact, many fintech roles don’t even make it to the jobs board. Working with fintech recruitment agencies can be an effective way to not only land a job at a fintech company, but land a job at the fintech company that makes the most sense for you. It’s possible to find a job in the industry on your own, but it can be much easier to work with an experienced recruiter, who will already have well-established links for you to tap into.

Adopt the Right Mindset
Finally, perhaps the number one rule for landing a fintech job (and, indeed, succeeding in fintech itself): adopt the right mindset! It’s unlikely that you’ll get a job at the first time of asking, or that the first job you land turns out to be the job of your dreams. Understanding the name of the game, chiefly that the industry has a startup-style mentality, can help you to stay agile and open to possibilities without losing your motivation.
