Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples- it’s a lovely chance to spend time with your little ones and make some special memories together. Life can be busy, and it’s easy to let days slip by without doing anything out of the ordinary. That’s why celebrating different occasions throughout the year can be such a joy. It doesn’t have to be expensive or over the top, but putting in a little effort to mark these moments can make them feel magical for kids.
Start the Day with a Special Breakfast
One of the easiest ways to bring a bit of fun into Valentine’s Day is by starting the morning with a special breakfast. It doesn’t have to be fancy, heart-shaped toast, pink smoothies or a stack of pancakes with a drizzle of strawberry sauce can feel like a treat. You could even sprinkle some heart shaped confetti on the table or use red and pink napkins to set the scene. Just a few little touches can turn an ordinary breakfast into something that feels like a celebration.
Get Creative with Crafts
Crafting is another lovely way to spend the day. Kids love getting stuck into creative projects, and there are so many easy Valentine’s-themed crafts that don’t require much effort or expense. Making homemade Valentine’s cards is always a winner, and they’ll enjoy decorating them with stickers, glitter, and anything else you have lying around. You could also make a ‘love jar’ together—fill it with notes about what you love about each other and read them out at the end of the day. It’s a simple but lovely way to encourage kindness and appreciation.
Bake Some Sweet Treats
If your children enjoy baking, getting them involved in the kitchen can be a great way to make the day feel special. Simple treats like heart-shaped biscuits or cupcakes with pink icing are always a hit. If you don’t want to bake from scratch, decorating shop-bought biscuits with icing and sprinkles can be just as fun. You could even wrap up a few and let the kids give them to family members or friends to spread a bit of Valentine’s cheer beyond your home.
Create a Valentine’s Hamper
One of my favourite things to do for occasions like Valentines Day, Easter and even Halloween is to make a little hamper filled with themed bits and bobs. It doesn’t have to be expensive, a book, a teddy, some sweets and fun bath products all wrapped up pretty always work well! Shops always have things that are themed but useful too like water bottles, blankets and other bits and bobs too that don't cost much. If your children are quite small you can always put away the things you buy in a couple of weeks and reuse them again for next year too. Check out charity shops, Facebook marketplace, eBay to get a bargain.
Make the Day Memorable in Simple Ways
There are so many little ways to make Valentine’s Day memorable, and the best part is that it’s all about the time spent together. It could be an afternoon picnic in the living room with heart shaped sandwiches, a treasure hunt with love themed clues or a special bedtime story about love and kindness.
At the end of the day, what kids will remember most is the effort you put in and the fun you had together. Valentine’s Day is just another excuse to pause, make a fuss of each other, and show them how loved they are. And really, that’s what makes any celebration special.
