Summer Holiday Savings: Plan and Pack Your Own Meals

The sun is finally here, and most of us are more than ready for some exciting days out! The summer holidays are just around the corner now, and it's time to make memories with our kids while they're off school. The only problem is that lots of these fun filled activities can put a strain on our wallets, especially when it comes to eating while out. So plan and pack your own meals, it's the way to go when it comes to saving money and you can still enjoy delicious food on your adventures. Here are some ideas for going about it.

Make a Plan
If you plan your meals in advance you can make sure your food is suitable for what you're doing but wont cost a bomb. Consider things like the length of your outing, the temperature outdoors and where you'll be going. If you're out all day, you might need to think of foods that won't melt or go bad in the heat. If you'll be eating lunch shortly after you arrive you can pack fresh things like sandwiches, chopped fruit and cakes since you'll be enjoying them early on. If your lunch will be eaten far away from where you've parked your car then you'll want to keep it simple so you're not lugging a heavy picnic basket around with you all day, so go with packaging that can be thrown away like paper boxes and bags. If you're staying close to your car, a cool bag is your best friend when it comes to keeping your drinks and perishable items fresh and cool. Pack refreshing beverages like water, juice or homemade iced tea. Don't forget to bring ice packs to make sure that everything stays chilled and ready to enjoy. That way you can pack up a fantastic lunch in the morning and head out, by lunchtime everything will still be safe, tasty and ready to eat.

Stock Up on Snacks
As well as actual meals, think about snacks too as this is what can end up being expensive. Instead of buying expensive pick and mix and popcorn at the cinema for example, take your own with you (there's no rule against this despite many people thinking you have to 'sneak' things in!) If you'll be out all day, something with more nutrition like dried fruit and nuts will give you energy and bridge the gap between meals without having to spend money or dealing with hangry kids!

Pack The Non Food Essentials
Along with your meals, remember to pack picnic essentials like reusable plates, cutlery, napkins, and a blanket or picnic mat. The last thing you want is to not be able to eat the things you've brought with you where you have nothing to eat off! You could look into camping chairs and a table too, or if you plan on barbecuing bring a disposable barbecue, or coals if the place you're going to has barbecues to use.

Find Scenic Picnic Spots
As you explore your chosen destination, keep an eye out for scenic picnic spots. Look for beautiful parks, gardens, or lakeside areas where you can relax, savour your homemade meals, and create wonderful memories with your loved ones.

By planning and packing your own meals, you'll not only save money but also have the freedom to choose healthier and tastier options for your family. Plus, dining al fresco amongst nature's beauty adds an extra touch of magic to your day. So, the next time you head out for a day of fun, be sure to arm yourself with a well-prepared picnic. You'll have more funds to spend on exciting activities and treats throughout your summer adventures. Bon appétit and enjoy making unforgettable memories with your loved ones!
